MUNICIPALITY OF EPIDAURUS
The
Small Theater of Epidaurus
or “shell
of the Argosaronic Gulf”, was excavated in
1971 after 23 centuries of silence. It is located
in the Acropolis of the ancient city of Epidaurus
at the South-Western slope and it has a capacity
of 2000 seats. It was built in the 4th century,
with the sponsorship of prominent rulers and up-
per class people, in honor of the God Dionysus
and underwent profound changes during the Ro-
man occupation. A remarkable characteristic of
the theatre are the inscriptions which consist a
real-living museum. This is why it is called ‘the
theatre that speaks’. Every July, significant musical
and theatrical events take place in this small the-
atre. The most important is the program ‘Musical
July’. Travelers can visit the theater by taking a
lovely walk starting from the port of Epidaurus
to the Peninsula Island and then follow the trail
by crossing through the orange groves. Also, the
small theater can be reached by road by directing
yourself towards the area called Nissi.
Το Μικρό Θέατρο της
Επιδαύρου ή «κοχύλι
του Αργοσαρωνικού»,
το
οποίο ανακαλύφθηκε μόλις
το 1971, βρίσκεται στην
Ακρόπολη της αρχαίας πόλης
και στη ΝΔ πλαγιά της, με
χωρητικότητα περίπου 2000
θέσεων. Χτισμένο τον 4ο π.Χ.
αιώνα προς τιμή του Θεού
Διονύσου, υπέστη ριζικές
αλλαγές κατά τη διάρκεια
της Ρωμαιοκρατίας. Ιδιαίτερο
χαρακτηριστικό του μικρού
θεάτρου είναι οι επιγραφές
που φέρουν ονόματα χορηγών
και αξιωματούχων της εποχής
και αποτελούν ένα ζωντανό
μουσείο, απ΄όπου προέρχεται
και ο χαρακτηρισμός του ως
«λαλούν θέατρο». Ο ταξιδιώτης
μπορεί να επισκεφθεί το
θέατρο κάνοντας έναν όμορφο
περίπατο με αφετηρία το λιμάνι
της Επιδαύρου, κατευθυνόμενος
προς τη Χερσόνησο Νησί και
στη συνέχεια να ακολουθήσει
το μονοπάτι διαβαίνοντας μέσα
από πορτοκαλεώνες. Επίσης, η
προσέγγιση στο μικρό θέατρο
μπορεί να γίνει και οδικώς
με κατεύθυνση τον οικισμό
Σπηλιά.
Das Kleine Theater von Epid-
auros, auch “Muschel des Argo-
saronikos” genannt, wurde erst im
Jahr 1971 entdeckt. Es liegt am
südwestlichen Hang der Akropolis
der antiken Stadt Epidauros und
bietet etwa 2.000 Zuschauern
Platz. Im 4.Jh. v. Chr. zu Ehren
des Gottes Dyonisos erbaut, erfuhr
es während der Zeit der römischen
Herrschaft grundlegende bauliche
Veränderungen. Ein besonderes
Charakteristikum des Kleinen The-
aters sind die Inschriften, die nicht
nur die Namen seiner Förderer und
Gönner beinhalten, sondern auch
die hoher Staatsdiener einer längst
vergangenen Epoche. Diese Beson-
derheit, die aus dem Theater eine
Art lebendiges Museum macht, ha-
ben zu seiner Charakterisierung als
“sprechendes Theater” geführt. Der
wunderschöne Fußweg dorthin be-
ginnt mit der Straße entlang des
Hafens von Epidauros zur Halbinsel
des Ortes, von dort führt ein Pfad
vorbei an Olivenbäumen und durch
Orangenhaine, die immer wieder
den Blick aufs Meer frei geben.
Wer eine Autofahrt vorzieht, be-
ginnt die kurze Strecke ebenso am
Hafen und fährt in Richtung der
Siedlung Spilia.
