Als eine der ältesten Städte
Griechenlands, blickt Argos
auf eine lange Geschichte zurück.
Der mythische ägyptische Held
Inachos war der Begründer und
erste König der Stadt, und er
war auch der erste Lehrer der
Glaskunst, der Herstellung von
Kleidung und dem Bestellen der
Felder.
Die Stadt sollte um die
Mitte des 7. Jh. v. Chr. eine tra-
gende Rolle für den Peloponnes
und ganz Griechenland spielen,
als Athen und auch Sparta ihre
Stärke herausforderten. Bereits
mit den Herrschern von Argos
erschienen erste demokratische
Grundzüge, ein Umstand, der
immer wieder Anlass zu krieg-
erischen Auseinandersetzungen
mit dem oligarchischen Sparta
war. Nach der Mitte des 6. Jh.
v. Chr. wurden die Argier zwei
Mal von den Spartiaten besiegt,
worauf die Stadt ihre Stärke
mehr und mehr verlor. Nach-
dem Argos 146 v. Chr. von den
Römern erobert worden war, er-
lebte es eine neue Blütezeit. Ein
denkwürdiges Jahr der Neuzeit
ist das Jahr 1345, als die Stadt
zunächst von den Venezianern
besetzt wurde, um kurz dan-
ach einen Überfall der Türken
zu erleben, danach fällt sie ins
Dunkel.
Am 23. Mai 1821 his-
ste die Stadt Argos die Flagge
des Widerstandes.
Die ersten
Schritte, um wieder Zentrum von
Handel, Industrie und Kultur zu
werden, machte die Stadt gegen
Ende des 19. Jh.

και πρωτοδίδαξε την τέχνη του
γυαλιού, του ρουχισμού και της
αγροτικής καλλιέργειας. Έπαιξε
κυρίαρχο ρόλο στην Πελοπόννησο
και την Ελλάδα ως τα μέσα του 7ου
π.Χ. αι, όταν η
Αθήνα
και κυρίως
η
Σπάρτη
θα αμφισβητήσουν τη
δύναμή της. Έκτοτε το πολίτευμα
του Άργους θα αποκτήσει
δημοκρατικά στοιχεία, γεγονός που
θα αποτελεί συνεχή αιτία διαμάχης
με την ολιγαρχική Σπάρτη. Μετά
τα μέσα του 6ου π.Χ. αι. θα αρχίσει
να αποδυναμώνεται. Το
146 π.Χ.
κυριεύεται από τους Ρωμαίους
και
θα γνωρίσει νέα ακμή. Χρονολογία
ορόσημο αποτελεί το 1345 όπου
η πόλη καταλαμβάνεται από
τους Βενετούς και λίγο αργότερα
εισβάλουν οι Τούρκοι. Στα επόμενα
χρόνια έπεσε στην αφάνεια. Η
πόλη του Άργους, σήκωσε τη
σημαία της Επανάστασης στις
23 Μαρτίου 1821.
Προς το τέλος
του 19ου αιώνα, το Άργος άρχισε
πάλι να αναβαθμίζεται σε εμπορικό,
βιομηχανικό και πολιτισμικό κέντρο
της περιοχής.
The city has centuries of history
behind it. I
t was founded by the leg-
endary Egyptian hero Inachos, who
introduced the art of vitrification, cloth
making and agriculture.
The city had
a dominant role in Peloponnese and
Greece until the first half of the 7th
century BC, when Athens and mainly
Sparta put its power in question. At
that point, the regime of Argos is get-
ting into a democratic path, which is
the cause of perpetual conflict with the
oligarchic Sparta. After the first half
of the 6th century BC, the city will
start losing power. In 146 BC Argos is
conquered by the Romans, and flour-
ishes again.
An important date is 1345 AD, the
city being then conquered by the Ve-
netians and a little later invaded by
the Turks. Within the following years,
the city falls into oblivion.
Argos raises
the flag of Revolution on the 23rd
of March 1821.
Towards the end of
19th century, Argos is gradually taking
back its position as commercial, indus-
trial and cultural centre of the region.

Μέσω της Ε.Ο Αθήνας-Τρίπολης
φτάνετε οδικώς στο Αργος και αφού
ακολουθήσετε τη σχετική σήμανση στον
κόμβο Στέρνας. Εναλλακτικά, εκτελούνται
συχνά δρομολόγια ΚΤΕΛ (210-5134588)
από την Αθήνα από την οποία απέχει
120 χλμ.
Argos is 120 km far from Athens. You
may get there by car, taking the Corinth-
Tripoli highway, then turning left to Argos.
There are also frequent buses from Athens
(KTEL tel. no: 210.51.34.588)
Argos ist 120 km von Athen entfernt. Er-
reichbar ist es über die Autobahn Athen
– Korinth, dann der Autobahn Korinth
– Tripolis folgend. Nach der Ausfahrt Rich-
tung Argos sind es nur noch etwa 12 km
bis zur Stadt. Es gibt auch eine regelmäßige
Busverbindung der KTEL (griech.: ΚΤΕΛ)
von Athen
(Tel.: 210 – 51 34 588).
