Neoclassical buildings

Many houses on the island are large neoclassic ones, with tiled roof tops, long colourful windows and doors, whitewashed or colourful walls, balconies and ceramic decorations on their roof front. The first houses were built in 1463 in the area around today’s Clock Tower. One of the finest houses of Poros is Villa Galini, an 1892 building that has often housed significant personalities of the Arts and Literature, such as George Seferis, who stayed here while he was writing “Kichle”. Some fine examples of the local neoclassic architecture are the Deimezis building, made of an exquisite grey and red stone, and the marvelous Grivas’ store, with its huge doorways and its wonderful interior decoration.
